Rules on Three Levels - ROP Ch 12

Constituative rules: mathematical and logical, expressed directly
Operational rules: guidelines, what we know as rules of play
Implicit rules: unwritten rules, implied

Formal identity of a game: emerges from the relationaship between constituative rules (the formal meaning of a game) and operational rules (the real rules of the game)

Specificity of a rules: unambiguous character of constituative and operational rules make it “this” game rather than “that” game.

Within the magic circle, three levels of rules intertwined (translation between constituative, operational and implicit rules) creates the formal meaning of the game.

Designing elegant rules: to direct the player’s attention on the experience of the play rather than making sense of the rules. Elegance can be achieved by clarity in rules.
