About Rules of Play - Rop Ch 1

Book establishes a critical discourse: Henry Jenkins identifies building a critical discourse in four ways :
1- Training
2- Generational Transfer
3- Audience-building: finding a way to speak about them
4- Buffer against criticism: giving us vocabulary to defend against the attacks

Ways of looking at games: since games are as complex as human culture, it would be ineffective to view games from a single perspective.
Solution to view games from multiple ways: Game Design Schemas:
Schema: way of framing and organizing knowledge
ROP is designed according to three primary schemas of game design:
Rules as formal game design schemas: focus on logic and mathematics structure,
Play as experiential, social and representational game design schema: interest in player’s experience and interaction
Culture as contextual game design schema: investigate larger cultural contexts.
