Games as Cultural Resistance - Ch 32

Games as resistance: play, in a free movement, is rubbing against the rigid structure of the rules, producing tension.
Tension determines a specific experience of a game.

Resistance strategies:  can be created by designers or players by game modifications or mods.
Game modifications are transformative: they create friction that connects game to context, player as producer to player as consumer, designer to user, etc. Changes the cultural structure.

Modifications:
Alteration: make changes to existing game structure
Juxtaposition: combine unexpected elements within a game space
Reinvention: rework entire game structures in deeper levels

When a game enacts cultural resistance:
- transition between space inside and outside the game is interrupted.
- players become conscious about the things they may not notice normally
- players experience transformative play
- their consciousness result in richer play
