Defining Play - Ch 22

Relationship between play and game:
Descriptive
-Games is formalized part of everything we consider as play
Conceptual
-In addition to rules and culture, play is an essential component of games

Game Play: formalized interaction forms as players follows the rules and experience the system.
Ludic Activities: Not only including game related  activities but all non-game behaviors.
Play is free movement within a more rigid structure.

Transformative play: play can overflow the rigid structure it is in, and becomes unpredictable. Free movement of play alters the more rigid structure.

Roger Caillois classifies play:
1- agon: competitive play
2- alea: chance-based play
3- mimicry: simulation or make believe play
4- ilinx: vertigo or physically based play
